A dental crown, or sometimes called a "cap," is a cover that encases an entire tooth surface, helping to return it to its original size and shape. A dental crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with other types of dental restorations.
Porcelain dental crowns are durable and last many years with good oral hygiene. Like most restorations, they may need to be replaced after a number of years. A porcelain dental crown is made to match the same shape, size, and color of your other teeth, giving you a long-lasting, beautiful smile.
There are a number of reasons for crafting dental crowns:
To protect and cover a weak tooth, likely because of decay under an old filling.
For broken tooth repair.
To help stabilize sections of a cracked tooth.
To cover and strengthen a tooth where there is very little tooth structure remaining.
To repair a severely worn down tooth.
To anchor a dental bridge in place.
To encase a dental implant.
Reinforce a root canal.
To repair misshaped or severely discolored teeth.
A crown procedure usually requires two appointments.
Precision impressions (or molds) that are used to create your custom crown.
An impression will also be used to create a temporary crown that will stay on your tooth for approximately three weeks while your permanent crown is fabricated by our dental laboratory.
We will prepare the tooth by removing decay and shaping the surface to provide a stable foundation for the dental crown.
Place a temporary crown and check your occlusion (bite).
All of our dental work is crafted in the USA and Canada.
Remove temporary crown.
Clean the tooth.
Place the permanent crown and ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.
Good oral hygiene, proper eating habits, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of dental crowns.
The only difference between a dental crown and a dental implant crown is the implant. An implant replaces a missing tooth or a tooth that needs to be extracted. Click here for more information on dental implants.
